Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and incorporated with diverse amounts of the sulphur non-metal element (0.5, 0.8 and 1.1 wt.%). The physicochemical properties of all nanoparticles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra. The pure ZnO and S-containing ZnO nanoparticles (particularly the 0.5 wt%. S-doped sample) could be used as photocatalysts in degradation of various organic pollutants. It was suggested that among the photocatalysts containing diverse S amounts, the sample doped with 0.5 wt.% of S could be selected as the most efficient photocatalyst because it illustrated the lowest recombination of electron-hole pairs in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra.
