This work focused on the synthesis of silica nanoparticles through hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and investigating the affecting parameters on their morphology via an experimental design approach. Effect of ammonia content (5-9 mL) and the treatment time (40-120 min) were quantitatively studied through the response surface methodology (RSM). Cotton fabric was dip-coated within the prepared silica hydrosol and after drying at specified conditions, was subjected to morphological and hydrophobicity analysis. The results revealed the formation of spherical silica nanoparticles with an average particle size of 270 nm throughout the fabric surface. Investigating the hydrophobicity of fabrics via water contact angle (WCA) measurement showed that decreasing the reaction time from 120 min to 40 min lead to an increase in WCA from 125 degrees to 133 degrees thanks to increasing the roughness of the fabric surface.
