Environmentally friendly anti-corrosion surface treatment based on zirconium/hydroxyapatite coating was developed for magnesium AZ31 alloy. In this study the effect of hydroxyapatite as post-treatment on zirconium treated Mg alloy for the purpose of improving the anti-corrosion resistance was studied. Initially, the zirconium-based surface treatment (Zr/HA) was optimized and applied on the Mg AZ31 alloy. Then, hydroxyapatite coating applied on the Zr-treated surface. The surface characterization was performed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and the corrosion performance was assessed by the means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. FESEM images showed that Zr-based conversion coating has a nanostructured morphology which could be effective for increasing the hydroxyapatite interaction with surface. Electrochemical results revealed that Zr/HA conversion coating have better anti-corrosion properties than Zr, HA and bare Mg samples.
