Mercury ion, as one of the heavy metal ions, even in low concentrations, is a threat to the environment and human health. Because mercury is biodegradable and can enter the food chain and damage the human body through the gastrointestinal tract, internal organs, and central nervous system. Therefore, various sensors have been developed to detect mercury ions, including colorimetry, photoelectrochemistry, atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy, electrochemical techniques, spectroscopy, and so on. Fluorescent nanomaterials are relatively easy to synthesize. Among fluorescent nanomaterials, fluorescent carbon dots have been considered due to their simple preparation, low toxicity, good optical stability, and biocompatibility. Also, another unique feature of fluorescence analysis is the proportionality of color change with changing the dose of analytes under ultraviolet light. In the present study, using a plant from the Urtica dioica, carbon dots were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Fluorescent emission of carbon dots synthesized in interaction with mercury ions was significantly reduced.
